Indications TANTUM VERDE ® Benzidamine hydrochloride

TANTUM VERDE® is indicated in the treatment of inflammatory or irritative diseases of the oral cavity, also of a painful nature, due to infectious events or dental procedures.

Mechanism of action TANTUM VERDE ® Benzidamine hydrochloride

Benzidamine, the active ingredient of TANTUM VERDE®, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with a strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity, which does not perform classically with the inhibition of cyclooxygenases but with the stabilization of cell membranes and walls of small vessels, useful for controlling the spread of elements and cytokines of inflammation in the home.

This activity, attributable to topical use in small doses of the drug, is enhanced by the reduction of prostaglandin synthesis, in the case in which the active principle is used at decidedly more important therapeutic doses.

Topical use, by means of sprays or mouthwashes, therefore allows Benzidamine to carry out its therapeutic action directly on site, and more precisely at the level of the oro-pharyngeal mucosa, without determining any type of systemic absorption, thus limiting the potential side effects.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

HONEY AND BENZIDAMINE IN THE TREATMENT OF MUCOSITIS

Indian J Palliat Care. 2012 Sep; 18 (3): 190-5

Very interesting study that shows how honey can perform a therapeutic action similar to that of Benzidamine in the treatment of radiation mucositis, significantly improving both the clinical features of the disease and the quality of life of the affected patient.

BENZIDAMINE AND RADIOTHERAPY MUCOSITIS

Contemp Clin Dent. 2011 Jan; 2 (1): 8-12.

Interesting clinical trial that demonstrates how Benzidamine can be effective, safe and well tolerated in the treatment of radiation therapy mucositis, reducing the intensity of pain.

BENZIDAMINE IN BIOADHESIVE GEL FOR ORAL MUCOSA

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg. 2011 Sep; 40 (9): 973-8.

Innovative work that tests the activity of small formations of bi-adhesive gel based on Benzidamine in repairing ulcerations of the oral mucosa in laboratory animals, resulting generally effective and well tolerated.

Method of use and dosage

GREEN TANTUM®

3 mg Benzidamine Hydrochloride tablets for oral use;

0.15 gr mouthwash of Benzidamine hydrochloride per 100 ml of product;

Nebulizer spray with 0.3% Benzidamine Hydrochloride;

Toothpaste 0.5% Benzydamine Hydrochloride.

Depending on the format, the choice of which should be made considering the general characteristics of the patient's state of health, we generally recommend 3 washes per day with toothpaste or mouthwash, preferably pure or diluted in 15 ml of water, using 3- 4 daily applications of spray or taking a tablet 3 times a day to dissolve slowly in the mouth.

It is recommended not to extend the therapy beyond 3-5 days of treatment; should symptoms persist it would be advisable to consult your doctor.

Warnings TANTUM VERDE ® Benzidamine hydrochloride

The use of TANTUM VERDE® should be preceded by a medical or dental examination in order to clarify the origin of inflammation, ulceration or irritation of the oral and oropharyngeal mucosa, considering also how these signs can sometimes represent the onset of much more serious systemic diseases.

The use of Benzidamine hydrochloride, especially when prolonged over time, could give rise to local sensitization phenomena, such as to require the suspension of therapy.

Before starting the use of TANTUM VERDE® it is recommended to read the leaflet carefully, considering that depending on the chosen pharmaceutical format there may be alcohol, parahydroxybenzoates or isomalt, sometimes responsible for serious adverse reactions.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

The absence of studies able to fully characterize the safety profile of Benzidamine for fetal health limits the use of TANTUM VERDE® during pregnancy and in the subsequent breastfeeding period.

Should the use of this drug prove necessary, it would be advisable for the physician to carefully evaluate the cost-benefit ratio and carefully supervise the entire therapeutic process.

Interactions

Given the low systemic absorption of the active ingredient, clinically relevant drug interactions are not known to date.

Contraindications TANTUM VERDE ® Benzidamine hydrochloride

The use of TANTUM VERDE® is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to the active ingredient or to one of its excipients.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

The use of TANTUM VERDE® is generally safe and has no clinically relevant side effects.

The most frequently documented adverse reactions are due to local events such as tingling and loss of taste mostly associated with the local anesthetic effect of the active ingredient.

The central, gastrointestinal and hypersensitivity adverse reactions to the active ingredient are decidedly more rare.

Note

TANTUM VERDE® is a non-prescription drug.
