Hair regrowth

Generality

Hair regrowth is possible, but only under certain conditions.

The current state of the trichological science, in fact, does not leave the slightest space to all those miraculous claims proclaimed with excessive superficiality by more or less accredited sources.

For several years now, people have continued to profit profusely from the possibilities of hair regrowth, with a continuous media bombardment that particularly affects those who, overwhelmed by the fear of baldness, tend to abandon themselves to promises that are manifestly impossible. Even more serious is that in many cases this behavior takes the subject away from the only professional figure that can help him: the dermatologist.

drugs

The discovery of the therapeutic efficacy of delminoxidil and lafinasteride allowed to halt the progression of baldness in a large percentage of subjects and to produce a satisfactory regrowth in the luckiest people.

In fact, minoxidil is successfully used in the treatment of various forms of alopecia, such as male androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and female androgenetic alopecia.

Finasteride, instead, is used only in the treatment of male androgenetic alopecia, whose main cause is to be found in the action of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is this latter hormone that is involved in follicular miniaturization, therefore in the processes of thinning and hair loss.

However, it should be pointed out that - despite the effectiveness of these active ingredients - hair regrowth is possible only if the hair follicles have maintained at least a part of their vitality and have not yet completely atrophied. The importance of timely intervention therefore appears clear.

Other treatments

To promote hair regrowth, other strategies can be attempted either alone or in combination with drug therapies.

In this regard, it is good to remember how important nutrition is in these situations. In fact, the adoption of a healthy diet can promote the growth of healthy and strong hair.

Even the use of specific lotions, taking supplements, performing scalp massages and laser therapies can have some additive effect that can be useful in hair regrowth processes, but their effectiveness is still limited if compared with the aforementioned pharmacological treatments.

Transplants

Those who are now completely bald should, unfortunately, get rid of the idea that someone or something has the power to regrow fallen hair.

At the moment, in fact, there are no really effective solutions, the only card to play in these cases is the autologous one, with all the limits of the case (in reality there are also more or less sophisticated wigs, often disguised under the most appealing names, but generally discarded a priori by the same patient).

Hair transplantation is a real surgical operation that is performed by specialized doctors. In a sense, it can be considered as a definitive treatment, since the transplanted follicles are taken from donor areas of the patient who, normally, are not so sensitive to the action of DHT as are the follicles present in the area receiving the transplant.

Conclusions

In light of what has been said so far, we can say that there are different therapeutic approaches that can help to promote and stimulate hair regrowth.

Before attempting any of the aforementioned approaches, it is absolutely necessary to objectively assess the state of health of the hair, in order to obtain a complete analytical framework, set the most appropriate therapy and verify the results obtained over time. This task lies solely and exclusively with the dermatologist specialist.

However, even his competence in the matter, can not help but bow before the most desperate cases. As stated in the article, in fact, it is possible to witness the partial or total regrowth of a hair only when the follicle is not completely atrophied. This occurs generally after many years of the appearance of the first signs of baldness: an atrophied follicle produces hair so small, thin and opalescent that it is practically invisible (vellus hair), therefore "fallen" even if in reality it is not.

In all those cases in which the suffering molecule retains a certain degree of vitality, it is possible to stop the miniaturization process by stimulating it to produce a healthier hair (terminal hair). It follows that the earlier the follicle's miniaturization process is implemented, the greater the possibility of hair regrowth.
