Hyperesthesia - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Hyperesthesia is an excessive sensitivity in perceiving certain stimuli applied to the skin surface (tactile, thermal and pain sensitivity) or to other sense organs. In the latter case, it can manifest as hypersensitivity to intense light and loud noises and odors.

Hyperesthesia occurs in the case of neurological diseases (especially in meningitis) and in conditions that cause irritation of nerves or sensitive nerve pathways (such as neuritis and myelitis). It also represents a symptom of strychnine poisoning and may appear in infectious diseases such as tetanus, shingles infections and rabies.
