I.Randi's Acqua di Sirmione

Generality

Sirmione water is a type of thermal water whose chemical and physical characteristics allow it to be used in the health field.

In detail, the water of Sirmione - which owes its name to the place where the source from which it flows - is sulphurous salso-bromo-iodine water . Because of this peculiar composition, it is able to exert beneficial actions for the body and, in particular, for the skin and mucous membranes, but also for the respiratory tract, the osteoarticular apparatus and the vascular system.

Famous all over the world for its characteristics, the water of Sirmione is now marketed in pharmacies and parapharmacy in the form of sprays to be used in the presence of nasal congestion accompanied by catarrhal secretions. Of course, in Sirmione - the birthplace of the water in question - there is an establishment that, by exploiting its properties, provides its customers with numerous types of spa treatments .

What is that

What is Sirmione Water?

The water of Sirmione is a hyperthermal mineral water whose source is found precisely in Sirmione, an Italian town in the province of Brescia overlooking Lake Garda.

The source from which this particular water flows was discovered in August 1889, by a diver named Procopius who, plunging into Lake Garda at a depth of 20 meters, gave the first shots of a pickaxe that brought to light the current source of water of Sirmione.

Curiosity: How the Sirmione Water was Born

The origin of Sirmione water dates back to 10, 000 years ago, when rainwater began to infiltrate from Monte Baldo (800 meters high) to a depth of 2, 500 meters below sea level. Thanks to this long journey inside the mountain and into the depths of the earth, water began to enrich itself with precious mineral salts, increasing in temperature and giving rise - in a period of time of about twenty years - to what today it is known, indeed, as water of Sirmione.

The rains that fall on Monte Baldo still continue to feed this long journey whose end leads to the gushing of the typical water of the homonymous Lombard municipality.

Currently, the water from Sirmione is packaged and marketed in the form of nasal sprays that are used in the presence of nasal congestion characterized by catarrhal secretions. In the Terme di Sirmione, on the other hand, the water of the same name is also used in the treatment of other problems that may affect the skin, the upper and lower respiratory tracts, the vascular system and the osteoarticular apparatus.

In addition to the line of products sold in pharmacies and parapharmacies for hygiene and treatment of nasal congestion, there is also a water-based cosmetic line from Sirmione.

Features

Features and Composition of Sirmione Water

Sirmione water is microbiologically pure and hyperthermal water . With this last term we want to indicate a water whose temperature at the source is higher than 40 ° C; in fact, it flows at a temperature of 69 ° C. In addition to the surprising warmth, the water of Sirmione has another distinctive feature, as it is a sulphurous salsobromoiodic mineral water . This means that it is composed of more than appreciable quantities of precious mineral substances, such as:

  • Sulfur, present in the form of hydrogen sulfide (chemical formula H2S, also known as hydrogen sulfide);
  • Sodium ;
  • Bromine ;
  • Iodine .

The presence of the sulphurous component gives the water of Sirmione a characteristic odor which, in common language, is defined as "rotten egg". In this regard, it is noted that the studies conducted on the sulfur contained in the sulphurous thermal waters - which is, in fact, the water of Sirmione - have shown that it is able to penetrate inside the skin and mucous membranes, acting at the cellular level both superficially - on the skin - and in the deeper tissues and organs inside the body. This ability would explain most of the therapeutic properties ascribed to the water of Sirmione.

In order to maintain the characteristics and the purity of the water of Sirmione, collection is carried out directly at the source through special stainless steel pipes.

Property

Properties attributed to the Acqua di Sirmione

Thanks to its particular and rich composition, the ability to exercise is attributed to the water of Sirmione:

  • A direct mucolytic action;
  • An activity of normalization of nasal mucosa function ;
  • A stimulating action of the immune system ;
  • An anti-inflammatory activity;
  • An antiseptic action;
  • A moisturizing action.

The first four activities (direct mucolytic, normalizing the functioning of the nasal mucous membranes, stimulating the immune and anti-inflammatory defenses) are mainly attributed to the sulphurous component; the last two actions (antiseptic and moisturizing), instead, are attributed to the salso-bromo-iodic component. However, it is likely that, to guarantee the set of properties that the Sirmione water is equipped with, the concomitant presence of both components is absolutely important if not fundamental.

The properties of Sirmione water and of salt-bromine-iodine sulphurous waters in general have been confirmed by various studies. In detail, on the basis of studies conducted on thermal waters containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) it emerged that this compound can be absorbed by and through the skin producing a series of effects, such as: vasodilation, analgesia, keratolytic action and anti-inflammatory effects .

When and how to use it

When to Use Sirmione Water as a Nasal Spray

As mentioned, currently, Sirmione water is marketed in the form of sprays suitable for nasal administration.

In fact, when administered locally in the nasal cavities, the water of Sirmione is indicated to decongest the first airways freeing the nose and the throat from catarrhal secretions. Thanks to its numerous properties, moreover, the water of Sirmione is also able to exert anti-inflammatory, trophic effects on the mucous membranes and moisturizers, very useful in the presence of inflammatory pathologies involving both the nasal cavities and the throat.

How to use Sirmione Water as a Nasal Spray

The mode of use of Sirmione water as a nasal spray is similar to that of any other product or drug formulated for this type of administration. More specifically, in the specific case of Sirmione water, it is usually recommended to carry out five to ten nebulisations per nostril, breathing deeply each time in order to facilitate the penetration of the product into the nasal cavities.

Not surprisingly, in the presence of certain types of pathologies and disorders ascertained by medical specialists and involving the aforementioned organs and systems, thermal treatments with Sirmione water can be carried out by the NHS.

Going into more detail, Sirmione's water-based spa treatments are indicated for:
