Insomnia - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, although there is a real need for sleep.

Most often, insomnia is the result of inadequate sleep hygiene; that is, it depends on the adoption of behaviors that hinder sleep, such as the consumption of foods with nervine effects (caffeine, cocoa, etc.) near bedtime. Even the physical exercise or excitement that comes, for example, from watching a thriller movie before going to sleep, can produce the same effect.

Insomnia can also be drug-related or depend on an irregular sleep-wake alternation. In other cases, insomnia is caused by emotional stress and psychiatric disorders.

Pathologies that cause chronic pain or particular discomfort can also interfere with sleep, such as COPD, asthma, heart failure, hyperthyroidism, gastroesophageal reflux, food allergies, motor neurological and degenerative diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and various tumors.
