Kidney pain - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Kidney pain is an algic symptom related to the flank or posterior cost-lumbar region; this manifestation can refer to the right and / or left side of the body.

Kidney pain can be perceived as dull and continuous, or it can occur with intermittent pangs and spasms. It can appear under stress or during rest. Furthermore, this symptom can be acute or chronic, spread to the lower abdomen or localized in a small area.

In most cases, the pain depends on kidney problems, especially if accompanied by other symptoms, such as fever with chills, difficulty in movement, asthenia, vomiting and urinary disorders (emission of cloudy urine or with traces of blood, frequent urination, pyuria etc.).

Causes include kidney infections, inflammation (nephritis and pyelonephritis) and nephrolithiasis.

The migration of a calculus in the urinary tract is manifested by an extremely painful crisis (renal colic), often nocturnal, which starts from the lumbar fossa and radiates to the right or left hypochondrium, towards the genital organs and thighs.

Kidney pain can also occur in the case of cystopielitis, an inflammatory condition, often of infectious origin, which simultaneously involves the urinary bladder and the renal pelvis.

The painful sensation in the kidneys can also be found in cysts and kidney tumors, hydronephrosis, vascular diseases (renal infarction), polycystic kidney disease, abuse of some drugs (such as NSAIDs) and local traumas.
