Sodium sulfite is the sodium salt of sulphurous acid.
It occurs at room temperature as a white, unstable powder that forms sodium sulfate reacting with oxygen. Sulfurous acid originates in the presence of acids.
Sodium sulfite is mainly used as a preservative, as well as a decolorizing and oxidizing agent.
It can be contained in egg yolk and in products containing it, in beer, in bread, in caramel.
It could reduce the vitamin content of the various products.
Sulphates (in which sulfur dioxide is reduced in the liver) are not considered harmful to health and are excreted in the urine.
ADI DOSE: 0.7 mg per kg of body weight.
