Phonophobia - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Phonophobia is an intolerance towards any type of sound, normally present in everyday life.

The acoustic hypersensitivity makes the noises annoying or unbearable to the subject who suffers, even if their volume is very low. Some of these sounds are perceived as potentially dangerous or harmful, without a real reason. Phonophobia can therefore be defined as a reduction in tolerance to sounds considered normal by most people.

Phonophobia can result from hyperactivity of the central nervous system, which can be hereditary or appear during life, due to periods of greater stress, depression and states of anxiety.

Phonophobia can also have a pathological origin. The phenomenon is emphasized, in particular, by headache, migraine and meningitis.

In the most serious cases, associated with psychiatric disorders, the term phonophobia can indicate a real obsessive fear of noise.
