Definition

Sinusitis is the acute or chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. As a consequence of the phlogistic process, the mucosa that covers these air spaces present in the facial bones that communicate with the nose, increases its volume, hindering the drainage of the mucus. In turn, the stagnation of this viscous liquid favors the proliferation of bacteria, triggering an acute episode of sinusitis. Often the phlogistic process is a complication of infections in the upper airways or allergic phenomena.
