Indications MECLON ® Clotrimazole + Metronidazole

MECLON ® is indicated in the treatment of symptoms associated with vaginal infections, in particular cervico-vaginitis and vulvar vaginitis, supported by microorganisms sensitive to Clotrimazole and Metronidazole.

Mechanism of action MECLON ® Clotrimazole + Metronidazole

MECLON ® combines two particularly effective active ingredients in the treatment of gynecological infections thus ensuring a significant extension of the action spectrum with an effective enhancement of antiprotozoal and antifungal activity.

In fact, the association of Clotrimazole and Metronidazole allows MECLON ® to be active against Gram positive and Gran negative bacteria, protozoa such as Trichomonas vaginalis and Toxoplasma, fungi such as Candida while sparing vaginal flora, important in supporting the mechanisms of defense against the penetration of pathogens.

From the molecular point of view:

  • Metronidazole acts by forming reactive complexes with the DNA of the pathogenic element, thus inhibiting the proliferative and biosynthetic mechanisms of the microorganism;
  • Clotrimazole instead exerts an inhibiting action against the? Enzyme 14 alfa sterol dimethylase, blocking the synthesis of? Ergosterol, a key element in the structuring of the plasma membrane of fungi and at the same time favoring the? Accumulation of potentially harmful intermediates for the cellular activities of the microorganism.

All this takes the form of a significant antimicrobial action effective even in cases of mixed infections.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

CLOTRIMAZOLE AND METRONIDAZOLE IN THE TREATMENT OF RESISTANT T.VAGINALIS INFECTIONS

Int J STD AIDS. 2005 Jul; 16 (7): 488-90.

Very interesting study that shows how the association between clotrimazole and metronidazole can be effective also in the treatment of infections caused by T.Vaginalis strains generally resistant to metronidazole therapy.

CLOTRIMAZOLE-METRONIDAZOLE: clinical experience

Minerva Ginecol. 1984 Jan-Feb; 36 (1-2): 47-57.

Dated study that includes the clinical experience in the treatment of vaginal mixed infections by combining imidazole derivatives such as Clotrimazole and Metronidazole, emphasizing the efficacy of this dual therapy compared to the monotherapies.

CHLORIMAZOL + METRONIDAZOLE IN THE TREATMENT OF T.VAGINALIS INFECTIONS

J Chemother. 1996 Apr; 8 (2): 96-101.

Work demonstrating the greater efficacy in treating infections due to Trichomonas vaginalis, than the association between metronidazole + clotrimazole compared to metronidazole monotherapy.

Method of use and dosage

MECLON ®

100 mg vaginal ovules of Clotrimazole + 500 mg of Metronidazole;

Cream for vaginal use with 20% of Metronidazole and 4% of Clotrimazole;

Vaginal solution containing 200 mg of Clotrimazole and 1 g of Metronidazole per 130 ml bottle.

MECLON ® must be used under strict medical supervision, so that the dosages and the relative therapeutic schemes can be the most effective.

Generally, for the treatment to be effective it is necessary to prolong the therapy for at least 6 days, taking care to possibly extend the coverage also to the partner for preventive purposes.

The modalities of "assumption" vary according to the chosen format and to the medical indications, although in all cases recourse is had to the daily single administration deeply in the vagina.

In certain cases, therapy with MECLON ® should be accompanied by oral therapy to observe a significant improvement in the patient's clinical condition.
