Loss of coordination of movements - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The loss of coordination of movements is a symptom that consists in the inability to maintain balance in a static position, to perform harmonic movements and to walk correctly.

The possible causes are numerous and include autoimmune, infectious, metabolic, toxic, genetic and neurological pathologies.

An alteration of gait and movement is found in the case of lesions, neoplasms, infections, inflammations or vascular diseases affecting the central nervous system and the spinal cord. Intoxication from substances (such as carbon monoxide, heavy metals, lithium, phenytoin and some solvents), alcohol abuse and radiation exposure can also cause walking impairment.
