Indications BETADINE ® Iodopovidone

BETADINE ® is indicated for cleaning and disinfecting damaged skin.

Mechanism of action BETADINE ® Iodopovidone

BETADINE ® is a drug based on Iodopovidone, a molecular complex consisting of a molecule of polyvinylpyrrolidone, a nonionic synthetic detergent, and iodine, therefore belonging to the iodophores category.

Much used in the antisepsis of intact, injured skin and oral, vaginal and rectal mucosa, they owe their effectiveness to the ability to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis, by oxidation of sulfhydryl groups, with formation of inactive iododerates.

The association of iodine with a macromolecule such as polyvinylpyrrolidone significantly improves the therapeutic properties of the complex, allowing a gradual release of iodine, while reducing the onset of potential adverse reactions such as irritation which is often associated with high concentrations of iodine.

The wide spectrum of action consisting of Gram positive, Gram negative bacteria, viruses, fungi, mycobacteria and spores, greatly increases the clinical indications of iodopovidone.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

THE USE OF IODOPOVIDONE IN THE PNEUMOTORACE

Pneumology. 2011 Apr-Jun; 60 (2): 78-80.

Recent study demonstrating how pleurodesis with iodopovidone can be safe and effective in limiting the spread of pleural fluid and potential infections in patients with pneumothorax.

ANAPHYLAXIS FROM BETADINE

J Paediatr Child Health. 2013 Jun; 49 (6): 506-7.

Case report that reports the occurrence of recurrent anaphylaxis following the topical use of iodopovidone, demonstrating how this drug, although safe, can in certain cases determine the appearance of serious adverse reactions.

THE USE OF IODOPOVIDONE IN THE EYE CLINIC

J Cataract Refract Surg. 2013 May 13.

Work demonstrating that antisepsis performed with 10% Iodopovidone may be more effective than other concentrations in preventing conjunctiva infections in patients undergoing cataract surgery.

Method of use and dosage

BETADINE ®

5% Iodopovidone cutaneous spray;

10% cutaneous solution of Iodopovidone;

The correct use of BETADINE ® should include the application of the drug about 2 times a day on the skin to be treated.

In both cases, both the application of the cutaneous solution and the vaporization of the product should determine the formation of a thin brownish patina that prolongs the disinfectant activity of iodine.

Warnings BETADINE ® Iodopovidone

BETADINE ® is only indicated for external use, therefore special care should be taken when using this disinfectant, taking care to avoid ingestion and direct contact with exposed eyes and mucous membranes.

The use of this medicine should not exceed 10 days of treatment, and given the presence of iodine it should be accompanied by tests for the evaluation of thyroid function, especially in patients at risk.

If the use of BETADINE ® determines the appearance of adverse reactions including irritation of the treated skin, it would be advisable to consult your doctor immediately and stop the treatment.

Keep the medicine out of the reach of children

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

Although the systemic absorption of Iodopovidone is not very significant, the presence of iodine in the drug places significant limitations on the use of BETADINE ® during pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding.

Therefore the application of Iodopovidone in the above cases should be justified by objective necessity and should be carefully supervised by your gynecologist.

Interactions

It is recommended to avoid the simultaneous use of other antiseptics or detergents, especially if based on mercury salts.
