Definition

Ovarian cancer originates from one of the two female gonads, which are the organs responsible for the production of gametes, called oocytes or egg cells. Early diagnosis is very important to increase the chances of treatment and the chances of long-term survival, even if it is significantly hindered by the initial asymptomaticity. Considering also the anatomical position, the symptoms of ovarian cancer are non-specific and mimic those of common intestinal or bladder diseases. A peculiar characteristic of these symptoms is the constancy and tendency to worsen over time: while most digestive disorders alternate phases of exacerbation with others of relative relief, or it is somehow related to lifestyle and eating habits, the symptoms associated with ovarian cancer they tend to remain almost constant over time, with a tendency to gradually worsen.

Although ovarian cancer does not give itself any major signs in the early stages, the patient may complain of symptoms such as heaviness, tension or swelling of the abdomen, sensation of gastric fullness, frequent need to urinate, pelvic pain or discomfort, aerophagia and alterations of the alvus.
