Stomach Mouth Pain - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Pain in the pit of the stomach is a troublesome symptom that can indicate the presence of various conditions, ranging from a mental illness to diseases affecting the gastro-intestinal tract.

As far as the digestive system is concerned, pain in the mouth of the stomach may depend on gastritis (inflammation of the mucous membrane covering the inner wall of the stomach) and gastro-oesophageal reflux (pathological rise of the gastric contents, through the cardia, towards the esophagus). These clinical pictures may be emphasized by the ingestion of irritating foods, stress and the use of certain drugs, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics.

Pain in the pit of the stomach can also result from unsuitable eating habits (eg too abundant meals in the evening or too quickly ingested, excessive consumption of carbonated or exciting drinks, such as those containing caffeine), alcohol abuse, smoking and poor management anxiety.

An intense and continuous pain can signal the presence of a bad digestion (dyspepsia), a hiatal hernia or, in the most serious cases, of a gastric ulcer. The possible causes also include neoplastic processes that originate in the upper and middle part of the abdomen (eg gastric cancer).

Stomach pain may also be associated with celiac disease, indigestion, food poisoning and biliary colic associated with gall bladder problems.

This manifestation can also be induced by extra-digestive pathologies, as in the case of pneumonia or dorsal arthrosis.

Sometimes, pain in the pit of the stomach may indicate a cardiac or vascular problem (eg heart attack and angina pectoris or abdominal aortic aneurysm).
