E509 CALCIUM CHLORIDE

Calcium chloride is a natural salt that, when used as a food additive, has mainly two functions, that of being an acidity regulator and that of improving the consistency of canned fruit and vegetables.

It can be contained in various products, such as canned fruit and vegetables, certain cheeses, olives, various industrial alcoholic beverages etc.

It is also used as a source of calcium in food supplements.

It comes in the form of hygroscopic powder or white, odorless deliquescent crystals.

Anhydrous calcium chloride: easily soluble in water and in ethanol

Dihydrate: easily soluble in water, soluble in ethanol

Hexahydrate: very soluble in water and in ethanol

This additive is also used in the industry for the manufacture of the antifreeze of refrigerators, glues, cement, to preserve wood and rock and also for the dust of fire extinguishers.

At the moment there are conflicting claims on the effects that this additive can have on human health: some researchers think that it can cause heart rhythm and digestion disorders, cause vomiting and nausea; for others, however, it is harmless, so it does not have any negative side effects on human health.

Since there is no security on the effects that this additive can have on human health, it is not recommended to consume high doses.
