Uretrorrhage - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The urethrorrhage consists in the emission of blood from the urethra, independent of urination.

This symptom may depend on diseases of varying severity affecting the urethra, including stones, inflammatory processes (urethritis and prostatitis), infections (eg papillomas or condylomas), benign or malignant tumors (eg adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma or transitional, etc.).

Urethral hemorrhage is frequently observed following traumatic injuries (including those from catheterization).

In women, urethritis is often a consequence of dilatation of the periurethral venous plexus (urethral caruncle) or the presence of a diverticulum in the urethra (syringocele). The stenoses of the urethra can also be associated with this manifestation.

The uretroraggia must not be confused with the emission of blood diluted with urine (hematuria), despite the drainage of blood from the urethra can accompany the first moments of urination.

Urethral bleeding may be associated with burning and urinary retention.
