Abulia - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The abulia is a mental disorder characterized by the progressive weakening of the will to undertake any initiative.

This phenomenon involves an inhibition of physical and cognitive activity: the subject hesitates in making a decision autonomously and in carrying out a specific action, while being aware of the need to have to complete it.

In the most serious cases, the abulia leads to the suspension of any voluntary act, leading the patient to total inertia. Concentration and attention problems can also be associated with the disorder.

Abulia is a symptom that occurs mainly in depressive states.

The condition can also occur in case of head trauma, intracerebral hemorrhage, schizophrenia, Huntington's disease, frontotemporal dementia and Parkinson's disease.
