Entropion - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Entropion

Definition

The entropion consists in the rotation towards the inside of the eyelid margin. This alteration develops slowly and may not be immediately apparent. As the condition progresses, however, the edge of the eyelid and eyelashes are rubbing against the front of the eyeball, causing conjunctiva redness and irritation.

If the patient does not resort to adequate treatment, corneal injuries can turn into abrasions and ulcers. Over time, chronic irritation of the eye associated with entropion can lead to infection, scarring and vision loss.

The most effective correction of the disorder involves surgery.

The entropion is most commonly observed in older people due to age-related tissue hyper-quality. Other possible causes include blepharospasm, congenital conditions (eg, xeroderma pigmentosum), paralysis or post-infective outcomes (eg chronic conjunctivitis). Sometimes, entropion is due to scar retractions, so it can result from trauma, surgery, trachoma, chemical burns or heat.
