Curcumin: the natural anti-inflammatory

Chronic inflammation is the number one enemy to which a great deal of medical research is concentrated. In fact, numerous evidences have shown that the persistence of a chronic inflammatory process triggers a sort of domino effect, caused by the overactivation of the immune system. The result of this chain reaction is tissue aggression, which can have dramatic consequences, such as the rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque or the development of genetic mutations.

Numerous preclinical studies have provided a solid basis from which to study in depth the efficacy of curcumin against various human diseases on an inflammatory basis.

Some promising effects have been observed in patients with various pro-inflammatory diseases, including various forms of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, uveitis, ulcerative proctitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcer, lichen planus oral, gastritis, vitiligo, psoriasis, acute coronary syndrome, atherosclerosis, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic microangiopathy, lupus nephritis, biliary dyskinesia, cholecystitis, and chronic bacterial prostatitis.

Unfortunately, the biggest limit to the use of curcumin as an anti-inflammatory is related to its low bioavailability.
