Joint noises - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Joint noises are crackles or creaking noises felt during a movement. These sounds can signal a problem to the joint itself or to the surrounding structures. In fact, they are typically due to mechanical problems (eg arthrosis, tendinitis, etc.) or inflammation (arthritis), with pain, redness, heat and swelling of the joint involved. In practice, a friction is created between the surfaces of the joints, which, instead of sliding between them without resistance, encounter obstacles that they overcome by causing a sound. Joint noises are sometimes associated with the feeling that there is "sand" inside the joint. During the medical evaluation, movements that cause roaring noises may suggest which structures are involved (eg articular cartilage, tendons, etc.).
