Bubbles on the Tongue - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The bubbles on the tongue can signal the presence of various pathological conditions.

The most common cause is aphthous stomatitis, which causes the appearance of small bubbles and ulcerations, with a greyish or yellowish surface and surrounded by a red halo. The mouth ulcers are lesions that cause pain, burning, itching and sometimes even make it difficult to swallow.

The reasons that determine aphthous stomatitis can be different and include stress and physical fatigue: in fact, this condition occurs frequently after a debilitating illness or during a change of season.

Other factors that favor the onset of mouth ulcers include nutritional deficiencies, traumas (including sharp teeth, prostheses and orthodontic appliances), inflammatory bowel diseases (such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), food allergies and intolerances.

The appearance of bubbles on the tongue may also depend on the herpes simplex virus infection . Unlike common mouth ulcers, these very painful lesions can spread throughout the oral cavity (lip, cheeks, tongue, palate and gums) and sometimes even at the beginning of the throat.

The bubbles on the tongue can also indicate the presence of an oral allergic syndrome . This condition is characterized by oral symptoms (itching, burning on the palate and tongue, possible swelling of the oro-labial mucosa, a sense of constriction to the pharynx and swallowing disorders) and, sometimes, systemic (asthma, urticaria, conjunctivitis, etc.) that arise within minutes of taking certain foods.

The hand-foot-mouth disease, on the other hand, causes very small bubbles close together on the surface of the lingual mucosa and, subsequently, on the palms of the hands and on the soles of the feet. The cause of this condition is a viral infection that is transmitted via the fecal-oral route.

Herpangin is also a viral disease that causes vesicular and ulcerative lesions on tonsillar pillars, soft palate, tonsils, uvula or tongue.

Other causes of boils on the tongue include anemia, Kawasaki syndrome (infantile vasculitis of unknown etiology), hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies (eg zinc, iron and vitamin B1).
