Heaviness in the stomach - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The heaviness of the stomach is a rather common symptom, characterized by a sensation of prolonged and annoying gastric fullness, felt at the level of the upper part of the abdomen. Often, the problems of heaviness are accompanied by gastric acidity, acid regurgitation and excessive gas formation (belching).

Usually, the problems of heaviness appear immediately after very abundant meals, especially if based on foods that are difficult to digest, also affecting people who generally have no digestive problems.

The feeling of heaviness in the stomach can also arise after a meal consumed too quickly. To avoid this manifestation, it would be advisable to chew each bite well and to refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages and fatty, spicy or highly seasoned foods.

Under normal conditions, the sense of weight on the stomach is a transient symptom, which disappears spontaneously after digestion. However, if it occurs fairly frequently (or even habitually) it could indicate a malfunction of the digestive process (functional dyspepsia), a food allergy or the presence of a disease from the gastrointestinal tract.
