Definition

Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate, a chestnut-shaped gland responsible for producing an important liquid for male reproductive function. The reasons for the phlogistic process are not always clear; only in a small percentage of cases, in fact, prostatitis is due to a bacterial infection. More often (over 90% of cases), it is not possible to recognize a real cause of origin; it is hypothesized, in these circumstances, the participation of several predisposing factors, such as stress, immune disorders, traumatic lesions and compression of the prostate by other tissues.

Further indications

The symptoms of prostatitis vary according to its origins and severity. Some inflammations are even asymptomatic, but in most cases the patient complains of problems associated with urination or ejaculation. In bacterial infections these symptoms are frequently associated with high fever, chills, malaise, hematuria and vomiting; secretions from the penis can also be noted. The painful symptoms associated with prostatitis are typically located in one or more of these sites: lower back, groin, abdomen, genital area and perineum (area between the penis and the anus); often they have a cyclical character.
