Scabies: how is it recognized?

Scabies causes a rash on most of the body, with a widespread and insistent itching . The discomfort becomes more intense at night and is essentially linked to a hypersensitivity to the protein products of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei (also contained in the faeces of the parasite).

We remember, in fact, that this parasite is able to nest under the skin and lay its eggs in small galleries that it digs specially in the thickness of the epidermis.

Tunnels of the scabies . It is the most characteristic lesion; consists of a thin line at most 1.5 cm long, of greyish color, which presents at the end a species of vesicle with serous content. The elective sites for this kind of injury are the hands (interdigital spaces, lateral surfaces of the fingers), the flexor surface of the wrist, the anterior pillars of the armpits, the mammary areola, the umbilical region, the buttocks, the genital organs and the palm-plantar region.

Nodules . They are small, reddish, noticeably pruritic features that have a typical localization in the armpits and genital area. In children, they can appear on the palms of the hands or on the soles of the feet.

Other non-specific lesions . These are secondary injuries to the "scratching" and others that recall those of eczema and hives.
