E102 - TARTRAZINA (CI 19140 in cosmetics)
Tartrazine is a synthetic compound, a sodium salt containing sulfur, which is presented in yellow granules and crystals. We find it in desserts, beverages, vegetable preserves (except tomato), zabaione ice cream and syrups.
Not all studies agree on defining the possible negative effects on human and domestic animal health (since it can also be found in the food of dogs and cats). It can cause: hyperactivity, asthma, urticaria, rhinitis, visual disturbances and insomnia; it could also be carcinogenic with mutagenic effects. The use of tartrazine is prohibited in Austria, Finland and Norway. It is thought to cause problems for asthmatics or those allergic to acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). It is also hypothesized that it may cause disorders in the learning ability of children.
