Compound cubic epithelium

Also called multilayered cubic (or isoprismatic) epithelium, this epithelial lining tissue is formed by several overlying layers of cubic cells.

It is a very rare epithelium in mammals, which covers only a few large excretory ducts (for example the excretory ducts of the sweat, salivary or mammary glands ).

The multilayered cubic epithelium is composed of a few cell layers (usually 2). The more superficial one is always made up of cubic cells, while the underlying layers can have different shapes; this is because, by convention, the morphological typology of the stratified epithelium is established based on the characteristics of the cellular layer furthest from the basal lamina.

The layer in direct contact with the basal lamina represents a source of unipotent stem cells (basal or germinative layer), capable of regenerating the tissue.
