Cataract: how long does an artificial lens last?

The artificial crystalline lens, or intraocular lens, is the most widely used prosthesis in the human body; consists of a very thin disk made of various plastic materials, transparent and biocompatible, which is implanted in the eye, replacing the opaque crystalline (ie when cataract develops).

The artificial crystalline is perfectly tolerated, causes neither rejection nor inflammation. Moreover, it allows an excellent visual performance, without forcing patients to wear huge glasses or annoying contact lenses, as happened long ago.

Today, alongside the classic polymethylmethacrylate, acrylic and silicone materials are used, which allow to "bend" the artificial lens and position it through extremely reduced incisions (less than 3 millimeters). The general qualities of these products make it practically an unalterable prosthesis in the life span of the patient.
