How to determine
The physical constitution of a subject is normally established by detecting its skeletal diameters and comparing them with those of the reference population.
- Slim constitution ;
- Average constitution ;
- Robust constitution .
These detections are normally carried out at the level of the wrist, elbow, shoulders, hip and knee.

Index of Pignet
To determine the physical constitution of a subject, the Pignet index (1901) does not make use of the measurements of the skeletal diameters of the wrist, elbow, shoulders, hip or knee; but it exploits the thoracic circumference and the fundamental anthropometric measurements (height and body weight):
Index of Pignet = height (cm) - [weight (kg) + chest circumference (cm)]
The result of this formula must be interpreted according to these references:
Type of Constitution | Result |
Very strong physical constitution | <10 |
Strong physical constitution | 10-15 |
Discreet physical constitution | 16-20 |
Average physical constitution | 21-25 |
Weak physical constitution | 26-30 |
Very weak physical constitution | 31-35 |
Miserable physical constitution | > 36 |
