Definition

Perionissi is an inflammation that affects the tissues surrounding the nail.

The inflammatory process occurs locally with swelling, redness and pain. The affected finger, moreover, becomes characteristically warm to the touch and, sometimes, a serous or purulent liquid can escape from the periungual groove.

Perionyxis can be caused by bacterial, fungal or, more rarely, viral infections. In most cases, it is due to a Candida infection. The candidosic perionyxis is favored by local traumas and by certain professions, which provide for a prolonged contact with water or with substances that predispose to mycosis (eg bakers-pastry chefs, hairdressers, gardeners, greengrocers and fishermen).

The perionyxis can also recognize an irritative or allergic pathogenesis.
