E321 - BHT - Hydroxytoluene Butylate

E321 HYDROXITOLUENE BUTYLATE (BHT)

The butylated hydroxytoluene is a synthetic antioxidant similar to the previous one, but cheaper.

It can cause skin reactions, cracking of the skin and physical problems in the reproductive and circulatory system.

Even this additive, such as E320, can promote the formation of gastric enzymes in the liver, thus fueling the destruction of other substances such as vitamin D.

It is forbidden to include it in baby food.

Butylated hydroxytoluene can be contained in chewing gum, in foods containing fat, etc.

There are still conflicting opinions on its toxicity: some experiments, in fact, have raised the possibility that it may cause tumors in the rat.

ADI DOSE: 0.05 mg per kg of body weight.

After the evaluation of the quantities taken at national level of BHA and BHT, this additive is one of the additives for which safety levels must be reviewed and re-evaluated.
