Onychomycosis: why do they contract especially in summer?

Onychomycosis is a nail disorder caused by microscopic fungi ( fungi ), very common in the environment. Infection occurs due to the penetration of the fungi into the space between the lamina and the nail bed (ie the part on which the nail rests).

Habits, humidity and heat

Onychomycosis occurs more frequently on return from summer vacation . In fact, the heat and humidity typical of the season create an ideal environment for the proliferation of fungi . Walking barefoot in the pool or on the beach favors contagion during the holidays, as well as repeated diving in the water and frequenting public changing rooms and showers in gyms and campsites. Even the incorrect habit of using stockings and tight shoes (which prevent perspiration) increase the likelihood of contracting a nail fungus.

Other triggers

There are many opportunities to come into contact with mycetes, but these microorganisms are not always able to settle and cause infection.

Onychomycosis is more likely to develop in the presence of previous trauma of the nail, excessive sweating, circulatory problems and certain pathologies that reduce the immune defenses, such as diabetes. Furthermore, during aging, nails tend to get thicker, so they are more susceptible to attack by fungi.
