Definition

Flank pain is a painful symptom related to the area between the abdomen and the posterior cost-lumbar region.

The factors at the origin of the disorder can be multiple and include demanding physical activities, improper nutrition, muscular disorders, stress and psychological causes, traumas suffered in the area, problems with the urinary tract and intestinal pathologies.

The pain in one side can be perceived as dull and continuous or manifest itself with intermittent pangs and spasms, under stress or during rest; moreover, it can be spontaneous or chronic, widespread or localized in a small area. The symptomatology, depending on the cause, can refer to the right or left side of the body.

Often, the pain in one side is the consequence of a kidney problem, especially if accompanied by other symptoms, such as fever with chills and urinary disorders (emission of turbid or haematic urine, frequent urination, pyuria, etc.).

The migration of a kidney stone into the urinary tract manifests itself in an extremely painful, often nocturnal, crisis which starts from the lumbar fossa and radiates to the right or left hypochondrium, towards the genital organs and thighs.

In addition to renal colic, pain in one side can occur in case of cystopielitis. This inflammatory condition, often of infectious origin, simultaneously involves the urinary bladder and the renal pelvis.

Pain in one side can cause various other diseases, such as kidney and urinary infections, tumors, vascular diseases, ulcers and constipation.

In untrained people, running and brisk walking can evoke localized pain at the height of the spleen.

With pain in the side, other symptoms may be associated, such as nausea, fever, vomiting, weight loss, abdominal bloating and constipation.

Pain in the right side

Among the pathologies that most commonly cause pain in the right side are liver diseases (hepatitis, liver cancer and cirrhosis) and biliary diseases (gallbladder stones). Sometimes, this manifestation is found in case of abdominal hernia, pancreatitis, diseases of the right intestine (appendicitis, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease and colorectal cancer) and reproductive disorders ( endometriosis and ovarian cysts).

Pain in the left side

The pain in the left side can be found in the case of diseases of the urinary tract, the left colon and the spleen.
