Nail fragility is defined as a problem linked to the resistance and durability of the nail, which is particularly prone to breakage. Brittle nails can present with vertical cuts (onicoresses) or even with a splitting of the lamina (onicoschizia).

Nail fragility is much more common in women, because excessive use of aggressive detergents weakens the nail making it fragile and susceptible to breakage, even for light impacts. Another cause that can make the nail weak and fragile is fungal infection, known as onychomycosis. Also the lichen planus can determine nail fragility, until it falls.
