Pancettas? ... They are not all the same!

Edited by Alessandro De Vettor

How many times do you see, on men and women without distinction, "pancette" or more or less prominent bellies of different consistency, volume and structure? Well, each of them could have different etiological factors. Below we will analyze more closely their peculiarities and causes, to propose in subsequent articles some useful precautions to be followed in the gym for their treatment.

Types of Bacon

The accumulation of abdominal fat is a typical feature of the android biotype. We then begin to identify the different types of visceral adipose accumulation in the various android biotypes (Figure 1):

Prediabetic bacon

The Prediabetic type A

It shows a consistent supply of abdominal fat, mostly flaccid and voluminous. A diagnosis of insulin resistance is often established after a careful evaluation by the physician through specific analyzes (glycaemia, insulinemia, glycated hemoglobin, cortisol, testosterone, C-reactive protein). We are therefore faced with an accumulation of "hyperinsulinism" fat, which can worsen if concomitantly with elevated serum levels of cortisol. This occurrence, by lowering the levels of free circulating testosterone, would further increase the predisposition to the accumulation of fat mass, reducing the lean. Nutrition and training must be personalized in close collaboration between doctor and Personal Trainer, in order to educate the body on insulin sensitivity.

Hepatodigestive bacon

The hepatodigestive type B

It has a protruding, dilated abdomen, with the presence of fat tending to be more compact than flaccid. It is a typical characteristic of those suffering from problems in the liver. It is therefore essential to know the subject's eating habits (for example if he habitually uses alcoholic beverages) and to check the health of the liver through specific tests (hepatic ultrasound, transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, gamma GT, bilirubin, etc.). It is not an easy situation to manage, as initially an excessive overload and fatigue of the body is contraindicated in gym training, because it could have negative effects also on the liver system. We therefore recommend calisthenics, stretching and breathing exercises. Weight training should be inserted only after a real improvement of the clinical picture, it must be light and in any case free of poly-articular movements and direct work on the abdominals.

Metabolic bacon

The metablical type C

It shows an evident flaccidity of the fat, typical of the one who feeds incorrectly. Usually there are no alterations in blood indicators due to conditions of hepatic distress or insulin resistance, nor to alterations of hormonal profiles. Occasional hypercholesterolemia situations may be observed. In this case, no special training is necessary. This can be varied in exercises and in methodology, addressed both to weight loss and muscle toning. Obviously, the diet should be consistent with the improvement of body composition in the fat / lean mass ratio, in favor of the latter.

Pancetta Colica

The colic type D

It presents a tense and voluminous abdomen, which more than a "pancetta adiposa" is the consequence of particular conditions, such as aerophagia and meteorism. This particular symptomatology is typical of individuals suffering from disorders affecting the intestinal tract, such as "irritable bowel syndrome", and of all those returning to inflammatory bowel disorders (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis). It is also associated with celiac disease and, less dramatically, with all those with food intolerances. Also in this case, to talk about "colic abdomen" it is necessary for the doctor to ascertain the diagnosis through specific investigations that establish the actual inflammation (blood levels of inflammation and possible endoscopic and biopsy tests) and / or intolerances. It is advisable to supplement the workout in the gym with diaphragmatic breathing exercises and yoga techniques to promote relaxation. Food grading is very important in keeping a relaxed, relaxed abdomen devoid of those irritating and / or intolerant foods.
