An immunostimulant is defined as any drug or substance capable of stimulating the body's immune defenses, enhancing its ability to fight infections. This effect is widely exploited in the treatment of various diseases, which see the generalized decline in immune defenses as a causal, favoring or consequent factor: recurrent diseases or those with a tendency to relapse such as herpes, shingles, candidiasis, mononucleosis, chronic or recurrent respiratory infections (such as bronchitis), AIDS or other causes of general immunosuppression, and even cancer.

Immunostimulant plants are recommended especially in the cold months for the prevention of winter ailments.
