Definition

The solar erythema is a real burn, caused by excessive sun exposure compared to the subject's tolerance. The ultraviolet (UV) radiations, in fact, play an aggressive and inflammatory action, increasing the blood flow in the photoexposed areas. In turn, the increased blood supply leads to the production of factors of inflammation, such as histamine (also responsible for the sensation of itching).

Further indications

The symptoms of sunburn usually appear 1-24 hours after sun exposure and, except in severe reactions, reach their maximum intensity within 72 hours. In general, sunburned skin appears red (or purplish), hot and pruritic. In the most serious cases, there are symptoms such as burning sensation and pain when pressing the affected part. In addition, blisters, blisters, skin edema and superficial flaking may appear.

If a large area of the body surface is affected, general symptoms may develop (caused by the release of inflammatory cytokines), including fever, chills and a sense of general weakness. The most frequent complications are secondary infection and patchy pigmentation.

The treatment is similar to that for thermal burns, including cold water packs and NSAIDs to alleviate symptoms. Areas with vesicles should be treated with sterile dressings and topical antimicrobials. During healing, it is important to avoid further exposure to sunlight. Furthermore, prevention is essential by using sunscreens suitable for your skin type.
