Rice and Greenhouse Effect

The contribution of rice fields to the greenhouse effect is today observed with particular attention by scholars.

In fact, we have seen how the floods of the land destined for the cultivation of rice deprive the soil of oxygen in the long run, favoring the anaerobic fermentation of the organic residues contained in it.

Methane is released from this fermentation, which together with carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas.

It is believed that global rice cultivation contributes to 1.5% of the total greenhouse gases produced by human activities.
