Colostomy: some dietary advice

In general, those undergoing colostomy should follow certain dietary rules, effective in ensuring good digestion of food and avoiding unpleasant complications (such as constipation or excessive bleeding from the abdominal stoma).

First of all, it is advisable to fractionate the meals so as to make them lighter and more easily digestible.

Then, you should get used to eating slowly, maybe chewing food for a long time, and avoid eating too late. Therefore, nighttime snacks are inadequate.

Furthermore, it is good practice: to periodically vary the supply; if some food has bothered you, avoid it; eat fruit, vegetables, and whole grains daily, because they contain fiber and preserve from constipation; avoid fat-rich foods as much as possible because they are difficult to digest.

Finally, to encourage transit and elimination of faeces, it is essential to drink a lot, even almost two liters of water a day.
