Definition

The polycystic ovary is an endocrine (hormonal) disorder characterized by menstrual irregularities (in particular oligomenorrhea), excessive growth of body hair (hirsutism) and android obesity, all symptoms related to elevated blood levels of male hormones (androgens). The hormonal alterations typical of this condition determine an incomplete development of the Graff follicles, which heal leaving the characteristic cysts; the ovarian polycystic is also the main cause of female sterility.
