Onychomycosis: how to recognize the first symptoms

Onychomycosis is a disorder that should not be overlooked: over time, in fact, this annoying blemish can turn into permanent nail damage .

At the beginning, the infection is visually perceived: the nail attacked by the fungi changes its natural color and appearance, becoming white-yellowish, opaque and fragile . In many cases, longitudinal or small asymmetrical and discolored patches appear (the spots can be white, yellow, brown or green). When the infection progresses towards the inside, the onychomycosis manifests itself with the thickening of the stratum corneum and one of the two margins of the nail plate can rise and give pain .

Furthermore, the infection is not always limited to a single end (the big toe is more frequently affected), as the fungi can also affect the other nails or the skin of the foot. In the most serious cases, onychomycosis can cause the detachment and lack of regrowth of the nail . Furthermore, they can spread to other areas of the body.

For all these reasons, it would be advisable to contact your doctor or ask your pharmacist for advice, from the first symptoms.
