Is there a vaccine against chikungunya?

At the moment, there is no specific and large-scale anti-chikungunya vaccine, but several candidates, already being tested, look promising.

The MV-CHIK vaccine, in particular, uses particles that contain nucleotide sequences encoding the structural proteins of the capsid and of the Chikungunya virus envelope. A study published in the journal Lancet, reports that clinical tests conducted to verify immunogenicity, safety and tolerability, revealed the development of antibodies for at least 6 months after the last of three intramuscular injections (days 0, 28 and 90). These preliminary assessments also indicate an excellent safety profile for the tested MV-CHIK vaccine doses, which did not induce serious side effects.

While waiting for the validation of the vaccine, to avoid being hit by chikungunya when you are in risky areas, you should take the usual precautions against mosquitoes : long-sleeved clothes, use of repellents and stay away from stagnant waters where these insects reproduce.
