Definition

A muscle strain is a sudden and excessive distension of the fibers of a muscle. This injury occurs when the functional demand is greater than the power that can be delivered by the affected muscle.

At the base of the problem, there may be more factors, including incorrect movements, too intense efforts, repeated micro-traumas, level of physical preparation not adequate to the activity to be performed, postural problems and unsuitable environmental or climatic conditions.

Most common symptoms and signs *

  • Muscle pains
  • Edema
  • Muscle spasms

Further indications

Unlike the contracture, which causes a modest and widespread feeling of suffering, a muscular stretching presents itself with a sharp pain, sudden and well localized to the area affected by the injury. This symptom can make movement difficult and is generally followed by muscle spasm, swelling and inflammation. However, despite the discomfort, the subject is able to continue the activity: this represents a problem, as the stretching can degenerate into a tear.

For this reason, even if the pain felt is slight, it is advisable to stop exercising as soon as possible.

In the presence of a muscle stretching, it is necessary to observe a few days of rest. To relieve pain, you can apply an ice bag.

In some cases, the doctor may suggest to use a compression bandage, the elevation of the affected area or the use of anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxants.
