EXOCIN ® Ofloxacin

EXOCIN © is a drug of Ofloxacin

THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Ophthalmological - antimicrobial

IndicationsAction mechanismStudies and clinical effectiveness Usage and dosage instructionsWarnings Pregnancy and lactationInteractionsContraindicationsUndesirable effects

Indications EXOCIN ® Ofloxacin

EXOCIN ® is indicated in an eye clinic for the treatment of blepharitis, conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, keratitis and other external ocular infections sustained by pathogenic microorganisms sensitive to fluoroquinolones.

This antimicrobial has also been shown to be effective in post-operative prophylaxis, avoiding the overlap of infections.

Mechanism of action EXOCIN ® Ofloxacin

Ofloxacin, active ingredient of EXOCIN ®, is a synthetic flurokinolone usually used to cope with external eye infections, thanks to the ability to achieve therapeutically effective concentrations following topical-ocular administration.

Its therapeutic activity, like that of other second-generation fluoroquinolones, is determined by the ability to inhibit the bacterial DNA-gyrase enzyme, important in assisting DNA duplication, necessary for bacterial replication, together with the various topoisomerases.

This inhibition is therefore realized in the important bacteriostatic activity that controls the proliferation and microbial diffusion as well as the related symptomatology.

The different studies have shown the antimicrobial efficacy of Ofloxacin also towards different microbial species normally resistant to the common antibiotic therapy, and therefore responsible for recurrent infections of difficult therapeutic resolution.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

1. SAFETY OF THERAPY WITH OFLOXACIN

Work demonstrating that the administration of Ofloxacin according to the defined therapeutic regimes does not favor in any way the onset of microbial strains resistant to fluoroquinolone therapy.

2. OFLOXACINE RETINOPATHY

Experimental study conducted on laboratory animals which shows how prolonged use of Ofloxacin, inducing photosensitivity, can determine the appearance of retinopathy, probably associated with an oxidative genesis.

3. NEW RELEASE SYSTEMS FOR OFLOXACINE

Work demonstrating how the various efforts of the various research groups in identifying a delivery system that reduces the number of ophthalmic administrations to a minimum can improve compliance and therapeutic efficacy

Method of use and dosage

EXOCIN ®

Eye drops at 0.3% of Ofloxacin.

Ophthalmic ointment at 0.3% of Ofloxacin.

The therapeutic scheme should be defined by your doctor or ophthalmologist based on the severity of the clinical picture and the therapeutic goals to be achieved.

Generally, 1-2 drops 4-6 times a day should be effective in dealing with external eye infections.

Warnings EXOCIN ® Ofloxacin

Although EXOCIN ® has high safety and few side effects, it would be necessary to consult your doctor or eye doctor before taking this medicine.

Different studies have shown that patients taking other systemic antibiotics may develop allergic-type side effects following the simultaneous administration of Ofloxacin, thus suggesting to avoid simultaneous systemic and ophthalmic therapy.

EXOCIN ® eye drops contains benzalkonium chloride, a preservative with irritating power, while the ofaltmic ointment lanolin, responsible for local reactions such as contact dermatitis.

It would therefore be avoided to use contact lenses together with EXOCIN ® therapy.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

The absence of clinical trials capable of fully characterizing the safety profile of Ofloxacin does not allow the free use of EXOCIN ® in pregnancy, thus being generally contraindicated.

Interactions

Topical ophthalmic use of Oflaxacin minimizes all possible drug interactions described instead for the systemic use of the product.

However, it would be useful to avoid the simultaneous intake of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and possibly other ophthalmological preparations.

Contraindications EXOCIN ® Ofloxacin

The use of EXOCIN ® is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to the drug or to one of its excipients, when using contact lenses and during pregnancy.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

The use of EXOCIN ® is generally well tolerated and has no clinically significant side effects, although the appearance of eye irritations and feelings of discomfort has rarely been observed.

Note

EXOCIN ® is a prescription-only drug.
