Definition

Heart failure is the perception of the heartbeat, often described as a heartbeat, palpitations, a feeling of failure or a "dip" in the heart.

This symptom is very frequent, but relatively non-specific. Heart failure, in fact, can appear in the absence of underlying pathologies or derive from heart diseases that can put life at risk.

Heart failure can reflect changes in heart muscle frequency, rhythm or contractility. In most cases, palpitations result from an arrhythmia (premature atrial or ventricular contractions, tachycardia, atrial fibrillation or flutter, bradyarrhythmias and heart blockages). Serious cardiac diseases that can cause arrhythmias include myocardial ischemia, congenital heart disease, valvular heart disease and disorders of the conduction system.

Palpitations can be felt even in the absence of abnormal heart activity. Some patients simply have greater awareness of normal heart beat due to stress, excitement, alcohol abuse, tobacco, coffee, febrile illness or anxiety.

Also the use of drugs (eg adrenaline and ephedrine) and drugs (e. Amphetamines and cocaine) can produce the same effect. Non-cardiac disorders that can trigger or aggravate heart disease include thyrotoxicosis and anemia.
