Why does smoke stain teeth?

Nicotine and tar are the two main causes of tobacco stains in teeth.

Nicotine, although colorless in itself, assumes a yellowish hue when it is bound to atmospheric oxygen. The tar is instead dark, tending to black.

In smokers, however, dental stains depend - more than on the intensity of the smoke - above all on the quantity of plaque and tartar present, to which the pigmented tobacco molecules are bound.

Although there are no significant differences in the quantities of plaque present in smokers and non-smokers, there are differences in the composition in terms of bacterial flora; in smokers, in fact, the risk of colonization by hostile microbial species for teeth health is higher.

Smoking also tends to pigment certain types of prosthesis. Furthermore, it has been shown that in smokers the problems of dental stains linked to the use of chlorhexidine-containing solutions and gels are greater.
