White Teeth on the Teeth - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The white spots on the teeth are generally caused by trauma or excessive fluoride intake; this sign is manifested above all when such situations occur during the process of formation and development of the dental elements (odontogenesis).

During the first years of life, a traumatic event that affects a milk tooth can affect the bud of the permanent tooth that is developing in the jaw bone. Therefore, depending on the extent of the damage, permanent teeth may have whitish spots or deformations of the crown.

In adult subjects and children during odontogenesis, excess fluoride can instead lead to dental fluorosis. In this context, white spots on a single or a few teeth can be almost imperceptible or more obvious. In severe cases, fluorosis can cause brown spots and increase the risk of tooth decay.

Even the first phases of the carious process can occur with a white and chalky speck, which coincides with the demineralized enamel area under the superficial layer of the tooth.

Furthermore, any prolonged febrile illness occurring during odontogenesis can produce a permanent chalky spot on the enamel or a simple white color visible after the tooth eruption.
